Wise Reasoning About Peer Conflicts Among Adolescents With Delinquent Behaviors and Non-Delinquent Adolescents

Wise reasoning is critical for adolescents navigating uncertain and complex peer relationships. This research examines the role of wise reasoning in managing peer conflicts among Chinese adolescents, focusing on those with delinquent behaviors, whose peer relationships tend to involve greater conflict. Additionally, we explore the antecedents of wise reasoning and assess the impact of temporal perspective manipulation in a preregistered experiment. In Study 1, 201 adolescents with delinquent behaviors (123 males, 77 females) and 189 non-delinquent adolescents (98 males, 91 females), aged 13–18, reasoned about a hypothetical friendship conflict. Delinquent behaviors was associated with lower meta-level flexibility, perspective-taking, and valuation of relationships. Among non-delinquent adolescents, meta-level humility predicted the valuation of relationships, while perspective-taking was significant for adolescents with delinquent behaviors. In Study 2, 136 adolescents with delinquent behaviors (103 males, 31 females) and 136 non-delinquent adolescents (89 males, 44 females), aged 10–18, completed the Situated Wise Reasoning Scale. Adolescents with delinquent behaviors demonstrated significantly lower meta-level humility when reasoning about real-life conflicts with classmates. Educational achievement, temporal distance, and intimacy with classmates were significant predictors of wise reasoning for adolescents with delinquent behaviors, but not for their non-delinquent counterparts. These findings highlight distinct dimensions of wise reasoning that influence conflict resolution across groups. For adolescents with delinquent behaviors, contextual factors such as temporal and psychological distance are critical for perspective-taking, underscoring the potential for tailored interventions and educational programs.
