Purpose This study explored the role of blockchain technology in securing and authenticating digital records by synthesizing the perspectives of information technology (IT) specialists and records managers. The purpose of this study is to understand how blockchain can enhance data integrity and address challenges related to its adoption in records management systems. Design/methodology/approach A qualitative research approach was used, involving semistructured interviews with 18 IT specialists and 18 records managers from Nigeria’s National Information Technology Development Agency and the National Identity Management Commission. Content analysis was applied to identify key themes regarding the benefits and limitations of blockchain technology. Findings The findings reveal that while IT specialists emphasize blockchain’s security features, such as decentralization and immutability, records managers are concerned about its operational challenges, including complexity, costs and integration into existing workflows. Both groups acknowledge blockchain’s potential for improving data security but also point out scalability and regulatory issues. Originality/value This study offers new insights into how blockchain technology is perceived by professionals directly involved in digital records management. By focusing on both technical and operational perspectives, it addresses a gap in empirical research and highlights the practical implications of blockchain’s adoption in real-world applications.
