What the paper says

Hiring entry-level employees has become more challenging in recent years. This is particularly true for sport organizations, who often struggle to compete with other industries offering more-flexible and better-paying work opportunities. Thus, it is imperative at this time to better understand the hiring practices of sport organizations and to explore potential challenges and opportunities. While prior sport management scholarship has explored hiring criteria and skills sought by practitioners, few studies have focused on the hiring process itself. This study attempts to fill that gap through qualitative interviews with 38 active sport industry hiring managers. Data analysis revealed three major themes related to hiring: difficulty in hiring, subjectivity of hiring decisions, and conventional hiring process. Implications for sport practitioners and sport management faculty are provided.
