Purpose The study aims to examine environmental challenges, focusing on reducing fossil fuel dependence and greenhouse gas emissions, in line with Conference of Parties-30 goals. It explores the dynamic impacts of environment-related technology, political globalization, energy poverty and natural resources on the energy transition. Design/methodology/approach The cross-sectional autoregressive distributed lag (CS-ARDL) model addresses cross-sectional dependence, varying slopes and non-stationarity tests are applied to analyze factors influencing the energy transition in 11 Black Sea Economic Cooperation economies from 1990 to 2022. Findings The study’s empirical findings reveal that environment-related technologies and political globalization are key in advancing the green energy transition. On the other hand, energy poverty and the consumed natural resources are obstacles to this transition. Originality/value The green energy market is a key driver, guided by a framework for the production, distribution and consumption of sustainable energy. This study, using the CS-ARDL model, analyzes how globalization, energy poverty and environment-related technologies affect the energy transition. The results are validated through innovative accounting methods.
