Abstract
This study investigates how learning capability orientation and relational ties affect small offshoring subcontractors' decision to internalize export marketing resources. We designed a multiple-source survey and collected data from 158 small Taiwanese subcontractors in high-tech industries. The results show that (1) small exploration-oriented subcontractors will be likely to internalize export marketing resources, whereas small exploitationoriented manufacturers will not do so; (2) small subcontractors with more relational ties with home-country upstream suppliers will internalize export marketing resources, whereas small subcontractors with more relational ties with home-country industry peers will not do so; and (3) environmental uncertainty will moderate all these proposed effects. We found substitutive and complementary effects between each different resource/ capability on small subcontractors' strategy in internalizing export marketing resources. Our study provides a comprehensive resource-based view lens through which to examine new resource growth strategies for firms. The correction has now been made, and the following
