<b>Objective.</b> To provide a SNOMED CT nursing reference set to exchange unambiguous nursing data across different care settings. <b>Methods.</b> To develop a nursing Reference Set, Standardized Nursing Languages (SNLs) are analyzed and tested for applicability in the nursing Reference Set. A guidance committee is assembled to supervise the process. <b>Results.</b> The Clinical Care Classification (CCC) and International Classification of Nursing Practice (ICNP) are retained after analysis of 7 SNLs. From CCC and ICNP, 381 concepts are excluded. The final SNOMED CT nursing Reference Set contains 2633 unique SNOMED CT concepts. The Reference Set aims to provide all concepts necessary to document nursing documentation across different care settings. <b>Conclusion.</b> Further refinement of the Reference Set is necessary to validate the Reference Set by consulting clinical experts from different nursing domains and adapt accordingly. Continuous updates to the Reference Set must be supported with both clinical input and technical requirements from SNOMED International.
