Abstract

Although task‐focused help behavior is commonplace in modern workplaces, organizational researchers lack a valid behaviorally specific, recipient‐centered measure of this type of assistance. Perceived task help receipt refers to an employee's perception that another person has enacted a discrete, task‐related behavior that the recipient experienced as helping them complete their work. Despite its role in shaping workplace experiences, the construct remains undertheorized and underexamined empirically. To address this oversight, we developed and validated a reliable measure of this construct using data from five studies (N = 3014). Items were generated inductively and refined through expert review to ensure content validity. Although we find that task‐based help behavior is heterogeneous, encompassing perceived knowledge, materials, and labor, bifactor analysis supported a general‐factor conceptualization of the construct, leading us to recommend composite scoring. The measure demonstrated convergent and discriminant validity, correlating as expected with related constructs (e.g., OCB‐I received, help availability) while maintaining empirical distinctiveness. Criterion‐related validity was supported through predicted associations with relevant outcomes, such as performance and need satisfaction. This measure provides a theoretically consequential, psychometrically sound tool for capturing how employees experience task‐directed helping behavior, enabling more precise theory and research on this key form of workplace assistance.
