What the paper says

Abstract: The 2021 and 2023 reports from the Swedish insurance company Skandia, which identify Sweden’s “most unhealthy profession,” reveal a concerning trend that underscores a global crisis: the increasing rates of mental illness within the creative industry. This article argues that factors such as persistent power asymmetries, unclear mandates, short tenures, and budget constraints undermine trust and collaboration quality, ultimately weakening creative quality and limiting marketing returns on investment (ROI). In response, Sweden’s marketing community launched CommToAct, an initiative to improve mental wellbeing and marketing effectiveness through, among other things, better client-agency collaboration. One systematic mitigating method currently being tested is CoRATE, a SaaS-based diagnostics platform that evaluates the quality of marketing collaboration across twelve key performance indicators (KPIs) focused on clarity and empathy. Drawing on behavioral science, the article presents a framework to enhance psychological safety and relational trust by cultivating interpersonal competencies like inclusion, vulnerability, and curiosity. A shared understanding of creativity as a strategic resource and collaboration as a skill to be structured and measured offers a new path forward. The article concludes with a call for broader interdisciplinary research into sustainable, high-performing creative ecosystems.
