Cooperation mechanism for stakeholders’ sustainable adoption of blockchain-based food traceability systems: A tripartite evolutionary game analysis in the supply chain

Amid globalization, traditional food traceability systems (FTS) are inadequate to address evolving food fraud in complex supply chains. Thus, adopting blockchain-based food traceability systems (BFTS) is crucial for enhancing food safety. Yet its sustainable, large-scale integration into supply chains to deliver real effectiveness faces obstacles, requiring coordinated efforts from governments, food manufacturers and retailers to incentivize cross-supply-chain information sharing and collaborative tracing. We developed a tripartite evolutionary game model to explore how stakeholders’ strategic choices are influenced by cost–benefit parameters and the decisions of others, and analyzed the evolutionary stable strategies (ESSs) as well as conducted simulations to assess the impacts of the relevant mechanisms for incentive policies and data collaboration on system evolution. The results indicate that strategies are driven by net benefits, choices are interdependent, and two ESSs emerge in the game. Sensitivity analysis of government support parameters shows positive correlations between comprehensive project returns, market preferential policy intensity, cost-subsidy ratio, and system evolution toward ideal adoption, with decreasing effectiveness in promoting government support. For supply chain parameters, data-sharing collaboration positively correlates with evolution, while the coordination cost borne by retailers exhibits a negative correlation. Enhancing data sharing accelerates adoption by improving supply chain interoperability, outperforming coordination cost, which primarily alleviates retailers’ individual costs without sufficiently motivating manufacturers, resulting in slower convergence and less pronounced improvements. The findings provide a theoretical basis for formulating sustainable policies and cooperation plans, thereby promoting the digital transformation of the FTS and enhancing food safety.
