Abstract

Purpose The purpose of this study was to use bibliographic mapping to identify the major groups and areas of study on innovation in Brazil. Design/methodology/approach Bibliographic information was collected from Scopus®. Vosviewer® was used to analyze citation patterns, keywords, co-citation and coupling among relevant authors, countries and papers. SciVal® was used to assess the impact on public policies. Findings Major research groups publishing over 2,700 papers were identified. The research subjects focused on sustainability (eco-services, climate change, biofuels and smart farming) and circular economy, with documents cited in policy documents from national and international organizations. Social and educational themes had a low impact, while environmental and health themes had a high impact. Regional collaborations were minimal. Research limitations/implications While the specific innovations could not be identified, the groups identified are involved in innovation discussions within Brazil. This study aids in understanding trends and suggests future actions, including studying different sectors of innovation and the various areas of knowledge identified. Practical implications Journal editors, students and researchers can identify areas with growth potential. Policymakers can use insights to identify key themes in innovation research and prioritize their development. Innovative companies can better understand ecosystems to define business strategies. Social implications Policymakers can use insights to pinpoint key themes in innovation research and prioritize development. Innovative companies can better understand ecosystems to define business strategies. Originality/value This research offers insights that are relevant and applicable to both local and global challenges, fostering a deeper understanding of innovation in the Brazilian context. The paper also discusses limitations for innovation in Brazil.
