This essay considers digital administrative burdens in the context of the Robodebt case in Australia. Faulty algorithms unfairly tagged many as potential welfare frauds, and an unwieldy digital process offered individuals little chance to correct the error, instead coercing them into repayment. The scheme collapsed after investigations and a class-action lawsuit. The promised savings for the government became, instead, a massive financial and political liability. The case illustrates how burdens created by automation can be amplified in domains dominated by clawback logic, where the government prioritizes reclaiming resources. Such logics arise in audit processes, governed by a concern about fraud and assumptions of wrongdoing, while undermining values such as access, due process, transparency, or customer service. The combination of clawback logics with automation creates a risk of systemic error being overlooked until the scale of the failure becomes too large to ignore.
