Manufacturing companies must adopt circularity to extend the lifespan and optimize resource use in both products and production systems. While product circularity has been widely studied, production systems, despite their decades-long lifespans, have received less attention. These systems must adapt to multiple product generations; otherwise, they risk early termination, leading to unsustainable and costly linear resource use. This study investigated circularity practices implemented throughout the production systems’ lifecycle. It also examined the requirements and challenges associated with circularity. Through a multiple case study, the development of production systems was analyzed across six companies. Using the 10R framework (e.g. reduce and reuse), an extensive list of practices, requirements, and challenges related to production systems is presented. The practices offer valuable insights for industries transitioning from linearity to circularity. Theoretical contributions include detailed descriptions of each ‘R’, expanding current knowledge. Further research is recommended to define requirements to support circular production systems
