Miia Grénman & Daumantas Bočkus
Abstract
This study explores Generation Zs’ path to flourishing, focusing on hedonic and eudaimonic wellness pursuits and their underlying motivations influencing Gen Zs’ overall well-being. Data were collected through focus group discussions in California and Finland, involving 135 participants (78 from California and 57 from Finland), and analysed using the PERMA framework. While a variety of wellness pursuits and motivations were identified, findings revealed a strong inclination towards eudaimonic well-being, suggesting that Gen Zs tend to prioritize meaningful and non-materialistic wellness pursuits over hedonic and materialistic desires. Furthermore, the study identified seven overarching themes across both countries, highlighting commonalities in Gen Zs’ pursuit of flourishing. This study provides a unique generational perspective, enhancing the current understanding of the interconnectedness between leisure, wellness, and flourishing. Additionally, it offers valuable insights for future leisure research and practitioners regarding the pursuit of a good life among emerging generations.
