What the paper says

This study explores the role of higher education institutions (HEIs) in developing future skills for the renewable energy sector. The objectives are to assess the direct impact of HEIs on future skill development (FSD) and examine the mediating effects of practical training and fieldwork (PTF), industry collaboration (IC), and resources, technology, and infrastructure (RTI). Grounded in human capital theory, a serial mediation model was developed, and data were collected via a survey of instructors at HEIs. Results indicate that renewable energy programs in HEIs have a significant positive direct effect on FSD (B = 0.336, p < 0.001). HEIs significantly impact PTF (B = 0.372, p < 0.001) and IC (B = 0.186, p < 0.001), but neither mediates FSD, highlighting underdeveloped practical training and limited industry links. RTI is positively affected by HEIs (B = 0.149, p < 0.01), mediating the relationship and emphasizing modern infrastructure’s importance. The study underscores the need for enhanced experiential learning, stronger industry collaboration, and investment in advanced resources.
