Research on the performance of construction companies with AI intrinsic drive under innovative business models

As the advantages of AI-driven development continue to emerge, innovative enterprises are increasingly using exploratory innovation, developing new business models, and integrating AI to improve corporate capabilities and optimize performance. This study surveyed 174 practitioners in China's construction industry, using quantitative analysis and PLS-SEM methods to explore the endogenous driving force in AI assimilation and the interactive relationship between exploratory innovation and new business models. The results show that exploratory innovation improves performance through AI assimilation, as does the new business model. In addition, novel business models promote AI assimilation through corporate exploratory innovation. The study found that competitive intensity strengthens the connection between exploratory innovation and AI assimilation but weakens the connection between AI assimilation and performance. Based on these insights, this study proposes a research framework for improving performance through exploratory innovation, novel business model, and AI assimilation under competitive pressure and provides practical management suggestions. • The dual role of competitive intensity. • Empirical study on AI-driven innovation in China's construction industry and research gaps. • The intricate interplay between novel business models, exploratory innovation, and AI assimilation. • A new theoretical framework integrating competitive pressure, novel business models, exploratory innovation, AI assimilation, and the internal driving value of strong AI applications.
