Abstract

Tom Gosling’s 2025 article, ‘Universal Owners and Climate Change’, asks an important question: Is it in universal owners’ interest for warming to remain at or below 1.5°C, and do universal owners have a plausible way of contributing to this outcome? The following response explores downside risk, tipping points and feedback loops, incrementalism, discount rates, climate models, and the efficacy and cost of available investor tools as they relate to universal owners, suggesting that they have an interest in keeping warming to 1.5°C and that they have low-cost tools at their disposal to contribute to this goal.
