Abstract

This study examines the effects of advanced (New DB) versus traditional (Trad DB) discussion board technology on student engagement and performance in an M.B.A.-level accounting course offered online and face-to-face. The New DB facilitates multimedia postings and mirrors social media platforms. We find New DB increases engagement in both online and face-to-face formats at about the same magnitude. The increased engagement in online sections, but not face-to-face sections, was associated with improved final examination performance, driven by the New DB. Survey results indicate that students find New DB easier to use, more engaging, and better at fostering community compared with Trad DB. Our findings suggest that universities should adopt more advanced discussion board technologies that enhance the student experience.
