Leveraging the Metaverse for Sustainable Practices in Retail Business: Opportunities and Challenges

The rapid emergence of the Metaverse presents transformative opportunities for the retail sector, particularly in advancing sustainability across environmental, social, and economic dimensions.This paper explores how metaverse applications such as virtual stores, immersive product trials, and NFT-based commerce can promote sustainable retail practices.The primary objective is to examine the potential of the Metaverse to contribute to sustainability goals, using selected use cases that highlight its impact on reducing carbon emissions, enhancing social inclusion, and enabling cost efficiencies.A qualitative research approach is adopted, drawing on secondary data from academic literature, industry reports, and recent case studies of metaverse implementation in global retail.The analysis is structured using the Triple Bottom Line (TBL) framework to assess the sustainability impact in three domains: environmental (reduction in travel and returns), social (improved accessibility and well-being), and economic (operational savings and new streams of revenue).Findings indicate that the Metaverse can significantly reduce environmental impact through virtual shopping, support social sustainability via inclusion and employee empowerment, and enhance economic resilience through digital innovation and customer engagement.However, challenges such as digital inequality, energy consumption, and regulatory gaps remain.The study offers key implications for managers, policymakers, and researchers by proposing strategic pathways for sustainable metaverse adoption in retail.It advances theory by extending the TBL framework to immersive technologies and highlights the need for supportive digital and policy ecosystems.
