What the paper says In this article, we examine the factors that determine student success in a first-year basic accounting course. Using a unique sample from the Faculty of Economics and Business Management, Cluj-Napoca, we discover that student commitment to their academic studies reflects in-class participation and the use of online resources, which continue to play a significant role in their academic performance. In addition, we found that socio-demographic factors like age, gender, marital status, place of work, socio-cultural, and economic factors were significant in explicating the students' academic performance. The above factors have policy implications significant for the university itself but also for the national system.
