Family motivation in the workplace: an integrative review and future research agenda

Purpose Research on family motivation has grown significantly, necessitating a thorough understanding and evaluation of recurring frameworks. However, despite the substantial body of literature on this topic, no comprehensive review has been conducted to advance the nomological network and to offer guidance for future research. This study aims to systematically review and synthesize the existing literature on family motivation to clarify its nomological network and identify directions for future research. Design/methodology/approach To address this gap, the authors adopted a systematic approach to select studies for the literature review and identified relevant articles from Sage, ScienceDirect, Taylor and Francis, Wiley Online Library, SpringerLink and Google Scholar. Findings Drawing from the identified studies, the authors first clarify the conceptual underpinnings of family motivation and how it differs from other constructs within the prosocial motivation domain, underscoring its unique value. Second, the authors identify and evaluate theoretical frameworks that support family motivation. Third, the authors conceptualize the antecedents, mediating factors, contingency variables and outcomes associated with family motivation. Finally, the authors provide key recommendations for future research to advance the field. Originality/value Overall, this review provides valuable insights into family motivation as a powerful driver that enhances workplace performance.
