Abstract

Purpose This study examines how techno-stressors impact employee task performance through the family domain, drawing on work-family spillover theory and conservation of resources (COR) theory. It investigates work-family conflict as a mediator, and family motivation and intrinsic motivation as moderators. Design/methodology/approach A survey of 313 employees who use enterprise social media was conducted. Hierarchical regression analysis was employed to test the proposed hypotheses. Findings Work-family conflict mediates the relationship between techno-stressors and task performance. Family motivation mitigates the negative link between techno-overload and work-family conflict, while intrinsic motivation amplifies the negative link between techno-invasion and work-family conflict. Research limitations/implications Organizations should recognize the adverse effects of techno-stressors on task performance via work-family conflict. This study extends COR theory by identifying family and intrinsic motivation as critical resources and examining their moderating roles. Originality/value This study broadens our understanding of techno-stressors by integrating the family domain and providing novel insights into COR theory. It highlights the dual roles of family and intrinsic motivation as resources and offers practical guidance for managing the negative effects of techno-stressors.
