Abstract

Purpose Effective communication is vital for construction projects, ensuring stakeholder alignment and collaboration. However, communication gaps often arise, leading to inefficiencies, delays and increased costs. This study aims to analyze the factors responsible for communication gaps in construction projects and assess their criticality and impact on project performance. Design/methodology/approach This study adopts a quantitative approach, beginning with a literature review identifying 30 communication attributes and a questionnaire survey administered to 110 construction professionals in India. Statistical techniques, including factor analysis and fuzzy synthetic evaluation, were employed to assess the significance of these attributes. Findings Factor analysis extracted seven key communication factors: communication and planning deficiencies, operational and supervisory challenges, leadership and technological gaps, stakeholder and team diversity, behavioral and contractual barriers, commitment and prioritization issues, and project complexity. Fuzzy synthetic evaluation revealed that communication and planning deficiencies, and operational and supervisory challenges are the most critical factors, significantly impacting communication effectiveness in Indian construction projects. Research limitations/implications The findings are based on the perceptions of construction professionals and may be influenced by regional or sector-specific practices. Practical implications The study offers insights into the key drivers of communication gaps. It emphasizes the need for robust communication strategies, detailed planning and better supervision to mitigate risks, boost collaboration and productivity, reduce rework, and improve project outcomes. Originality/value The findings provide a novel quantitative framework for evaluating communication gaps, particularly in under-researched Indian construction projects.
