Politically, Malaysia experienced a comparatively calm 2024. Concerns regarding the relative stability of the government formed in late 2022 abated, despite periodic provocations and jostling. Anwar Ibrahim’s coalition government notched few major achievements, disappointing backers who hoped for progressive reform, but making at least moderate headway. The economy marked convincing gains, stabilizing after the COVID-19 pandemic and drawing in substantial investment, particularly in high-technology growth fields. Revenue generation remained a challenge, though, not least for programs to alleviate the still-high, and rising, cost of living. The environmental and natural-resource implications of Malaysia’s current development path, and how to meet the country’s human-resource needs, pose yet more daunting hurdles. Even so, Malaysia honed its profile through 2024 as geopolitically positioned to benefit from aspects of global political-economic rivalries and churn, and to make its mark, especially on the regional stage.
