What the paper says
Purpose This study aims to evaluate the emotional intelligence (EI) impact on subjective happiness (HF) and also to explore the role of self-efficacy (SE) as a mediator between EI and HF among secondary school teachers. Design/methodology/approach The antecedents of the study variables were validated using exploratory data analysis. The relationships among EI and HF, EI and SE and SE and HF were recognised using the structural equation model. Multiple regression analysis is adopted to examine the mediating role of SE, which is confirmed using the Sobel Test. Findings The antecedents of the study variables were noted as follows: EI (self-awareness, social skills, motivation, self-regulation and empathy), SE (mastery experiences, verbal persuasion and affective status) and HF. The results indicate a direct association among EI and HF, EI and SE and SE and HF. SE mediates (partially) the relationship between EI and HF. Practical implications Firstly, the study outcome offers insights to school administration to focus on regulating teachers’ emotions, cushioning the effects of negative emotions and burnout through designing workshops and emotional well-being programs. The outcome suggests that school authorities implement capacity-building programs to increase the positive impacts of PsyCap to elevate HF. Originality/value This study enriches existing literature on SE by exploring the relationship between EI and HF (uniqueness of the paper). Understanding the interplay of SE amid EI will help school administration to devise a teacher training programme to enhance the quantum of EI and SE.
