Integration of Islamic principles and digital technologies for sustainable halal supply chain management: a conceptual framework

Purpose This research aims to develop a comprehensive conceptual framework integrating Islamic principles, technology and sustainability within Halal Sustainable Supply Chain ecosystems, addressing the gap in existing literature that examines these dimensions separately. Design/methodology/approach Using systematic literature review following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, the authors analyzed 133 peer-reviewed articles from 286 initial records across major databases. A constructivist approach with thematic synthesis identified key components and formulated theoretical propositions. Findings The authors introduce three novel theoretical constructs: RBV–Maqashid Shariah integration, Values-Based Technology Adoption Framework (V-TAF) and Islamic Sustainability Synergy (ISS). The framework reveals 15 theoretical propositions explaining interactions among Islamic principles, technological enablers and sustainability imperatives. V-TAF addresses gaps in conventional models that explain only 23% of blockchain adoption variance in Islamic contexts, while ISS generates 19% greater environmental impact reduction compared to Triple Bottom Line approaches. Research limitations/implications As a conceptual framework, empirical validation across diverse Indonesian contexts is required. Future research should test the proposed constructs through quantitative surveys and case studies. Practical implications The framework provides actionable guidance for practitioners implementing technology-enabled halal supply chains and helps policymakers design supportive regulations. It demonstrates how Islamic principles can serve as competitive advantages, potentially unlocking US$15bn in economic value lost to halal supply chain inefficiencies. Social implications The framework supports Indonesia’s aspiration to become the global Islamic economy center by demonstrating how Islamic principles enhance supply chain performance. It offers pathways to address economic efficiency and social justice while aligning with Maqashid Shariah objectives. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study developing a comprehensive integrative framework simultaneously addressing Islamic principles, technology and sustainability in halal supply chains. It establishes novel theoretical constructs advancing understanding of value-driven supply chain systems and contributes original insights to Islamic economics, supply chain management and sustainability literature.
