Enabling green workplace behaviour in IT-enabled companies: role of individual green values, green intent and green human resource aspects

Abstract
Purpose One of the reasons for the growing sustainable business practices is the declaration of the UN Sustainable Goals (2030) in 2015, leading to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) policies across organisations. Against this backdrop, this paper attempts to understand what influences green workplace behaviour and employee perception of environmental performance. Design/methodology/approach To examine the proposed relationships, data were captured through a self-administered questionnaire from 391 respondents from the Information Technology Enabled Services (ITeS) sector of North India's Tri-City region (Chandigarh, Panchkula, and Mohali). The proposed conceptual framework of the study was empirically tested using the structural equation modelling technique. Findings Results revealed the significance of individual green values, environmental knowledge and green intent in creating a green workplace behaviour and influencing employees' perception of environmental performance. The findings also proved that organisations that have a strong environmental orientation engage in green activities. Originality/value As per the authors' knowledge, there are negligible studies that have explored variables like individual green values, green intent and green workplace behaviour using the ability–motivation–opportunity and theory of planned behaviour as the underpinning theories. Moreover, few studies have proposed and tested conceptual models with variables like green intent and individual green values in the IT/ITES sector, which has unique sustainability challenges.
