Abstract

Purpose Despite the growing market potential of halal supply chains and shared-economy principles, the shared-economy model has not yet found its rhythm in the ever-increasing halal market. To bridge this gap, this paper aims to propose integrating halal supply chains, shared-economy principles and blockchain technology to promote business inclusivity, growth and market expansion. Design/methodology/approach This paper uses Scientific Procedures and Rationales for a Systematic Literature Review to extract 389 articles on the interaction between blockchain technology, the shared economy and halal supply chains from Scopus. However, after the articles underwent a meticulous filtration process, 109 were found to be relevant to this study. This study adopts the SPAR-4-SLR approach because of its suitability for emerging fields, such as integrating halal supply chains and blockchains into a shared economy model. This study also used the resourcefulness of the Bibliometrics R tool and Microsoft Excel analytics to achieve its objectives. Findings This study finds an explicit dearth of research and practice on the interaction among blockchain technology, the shared economy and halal supply chains, despite their vast market potential, and thus proposes integrating these domains into a new hybrid model with enormous untapped potential. Originality/value Given the enormous potential of the sharing economy, halal supply chains and blockchain technology, this study reviewed relevant literature. The proposed interpolation is projected to contribute to the business environment by leveraging the significant potential of this innovative model. Importantly, this paper proposes a framework that can serve as a basis for shared-economy integration in the broader business environment.
