What the paper says
The disciplines of recreational therapy, exercise physiology, and athletic training work with adaptive sport athletes in various capacities, but practice recommendations for this interprofessional work are not yet established. Therefore, the aim of this study was to propose practice recommendations for these three disciplines working in adaptive sports. This qualitative research used focus group interviews with participants from the three disciplines. Findings included two themes for practice recommendations for all disciplines (interprofessional collaboration and holistic athlete care) and three additional, discipline-specific themes [recreational therapy as disability specialists using the assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation, and documentation process, exercise physiologists as training as challenging, safe, and empowering, and athletic training as emergency action plan]. Discussions of implications for interprofessional work in adaptive sport and future research directions are further presented.
