Traffic congestion modelling using trajectory speed profiles

Rapid urbanisation has led to an increase in vehicle ownership globally. This causes increased traffic congestion and consequent vehicular emissions, as well as deteriorating ambient air quality. Traffic congestion, hence it needs to be quantified and alleviated with effective traffic management. In the present study, an attempt is made to quantify congestion levels and to analyse the impact of causative factors on the same in a typical urban corridor in Thiruvananthapuram city of Kerala. A methodology based on the Speed Performance Index (SPI) is used to estimate congestion indices of the road segments. Buffer studies were also attempted with different physical features like the vicinity of junctions, bus stops, and schools, to identify their influence on congestion levels. SPI is also modelled with traffic parameters and geometric characteristics. The study can be used as an effective procedure for traffic planners to alleviate congestion for a sustainable transportation system.
