Purpose This study aims to investigate the factors influencing the adoption of Islamic mobile banking (IMB) using the extended technology–organizational–environment (TOE) framework. This research offers a new perspective on developing the TOE framework to accommodate religious principles, thereby providing insights into a comprehensive model for IMB adoption. Design/methodology/approach A survey of 970 IMB customers in Indonesia was conducted, and the data were analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modeling. Findings The results reveal that perceived usefulness and ease of use, representing the technology dimension, innovation and firm reputation within the organizational dimension and perceived risk and Sharia compliance in the environmental dimension all significantly and positively impact the intention to adopt IMB. Conversely, perceived security, also within the technology dimension, demonstrates a significant negative effect. These results underscore the importance of a comprehensive approach to the TOE framework in understanding IMB adoption. Originality/value This study provides valuable insights for Islamic banks, highlighting the need to enhance technological, organizational and environmental factors to foster greater acceptance and utilization of IMB services.
