Abstract
Purpose This study aims to develop and empirically validate the religio-centric servant government leadership values (RSGLV) framework to enhance Zakat performance (ZP) in Indonesia. By integrating Islamic spiritual values, servant leadership, governance theory and digital innovation, it bridges administrative efficiency with religious legitimacy in public Zakat institutions. Design/methodology/approach A quantitative approach using partial least squares structural equation modeling analyzed data from 400 Zakat administrators across nine provinces via purposive-stratified sampling. SmartPLS 4.0 facilitated analysis, complemented by key informant interviews to contextualize institutional insights. Findings The findings reveal that RSGLV significantly – though marginally – affects ZP and strongly mediates the influence of blockchain implementation (BCI) on ZP. BCI enhances good corporate governance, which in turn mediates its impact on ZP. RSGLV serves as a normative bridge, linking technology, ethics and governance to institutional ZP. Research limitations/implications This study focuses on nine provinces with a cross-sectional design. Future studies should use broader, longitudinal or cross-cultural approaches to strengthen generalizability across Islamic philanthropic settings. Practical implications The model urges Zakat institutions and regulators to integrate Islamic ethical values into strategic frameworks. Blockchain initiatives must be spiritually grounded to enhance transparency, legitimacy and institutional outcomes. Social implications RSGLV promotes justice, institutional trust and Mustahik empowerment. It reframes Zakat as a spiritual mechanism for inclusive development rooted in Islamic-ethical ideals. Originality/value This study introduces RSGLV as an original, religion-based leadership framework operationalized within digital Zakat-governance. It provides a pioneering value-technology integration model for enhancing accountability, public trust and socio-religious impact in Muslim-majority societies.
