This article provides an introduction to Journal of Tourism History’s special issue on the twentieth-century spa. It addresses the imbalance in the state of research regarding spas between the ‘long’ nineteenth and the ‘short’ twentieth century and suggests a more inclusive approach to the latter, before introducing the contributions to this volume.
